This introductory workshop offers a foundational overview of Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C), an evidence-based, experiential, and emotion-centered approach to couple therapy that helps therapists understand and work with the emotional and relational processes underlying couple distress. It is one of the most researched forms of couples therapy.
Greenberg and Goldman’s (2008) approach expands on the earlier work of Greenberg and Johnson (1988). While it retains a strong focus on attachment needs and fostering emotional responsiveness between partners, it also places greater emphasis on identity needs and the regulation of emotional experience within couple interactions. This becomes especially important when working with couples in which one or both partners carry histories of trauma, where difficulties with emotional regulation, safety, and sense of self may significantly shape relational dynamics.
