Introduction to Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) For Couples

This introductory workshop offers a foundational overview of Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C), an evidence-based, experiential, and emotion-centered approach to couple therapy that helps therapists understand and work with the emotional and relational processes underlying couple distress. It is one of the most researched forms of couples therapy.

Greenberg and Goldman’s (2008) approach expands on the earlier work of Greenberg and Johnson (1988). While it retains a strong focus on attachment needs and fostering emotional responsiveness between partners, it also places greater emphasis on identity needs and the regulation of emotional experience within couple interactions. This becomes especially important when working with couples in which one or both partners carry histories of trauma, where difficulties with emotional regulation, safety, and sense of self may significantly shape relational dynamics.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this introductory workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a foundational understanding of Emotion-Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C) and its core principles
  • Understand couple distress through the lens of attachment and identity
  • Identify and track negative interaction cycles in couple sessions
  • Begin to identify primary and secondary emotional processes in couple interactions
  • Demonstrate beginning skills in empathic attunement to both partners
  • Recognize key therapist tasks in facilitating emotional processing within couple work
  • Reflect on their own therapeutic stance when working with couples

This workshop may be helpful for:

Psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, trainees, and mental health professionals interested in working with couples from an experiential and emotion-focused perspective.
